State and Town officials and residents alike gathered on Friday, October 28th at Warren's Historic Armory to celebrate Downtown Warren as one of 2016's Great Places in America.
After the ceremony, guests were encouraged to take advantage of open houses around Warren that showcased some of the more unique aspects of the town.
"The eco-haven of downtown Warren is ideal for bikers and foodies alike. The tiny downtown area and its highly involved community have set the green standard for active living, while local foods have set the stage for a story of urban renewal," the association said in a news release.
“Warren is very excited about this designation,”said Joseph DePasquale, Town Council President. “This will help us get the word out on what we already know: Warren is a New England gem. Our diverse community is committed to preserving what we have and continuing to make it better. Come see us; we like to share!”
In addition to downtown Warren, APA also recognized the following neighborhoods this year: downtown Santa Ana, California; midtown Atlanta, Georgia; Old Louisville, Kentucky; and Nob Hill, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
On Friday, May 13, 2016, Warren received a special visit from Rhode Island Governor, Gina M Raimondo. Governor Raimondo had the opportunity to visit local Warren landmarks, businesses and speak with Warren government officials, entrepreneurs and artists. Of her visit to Warren, the Governor posted the following to her Facebook page:
"The hard working people of Warren, local leaders, entrepreneurs and artists that I met today are all examples of what makes Rhode Island special. This town is more vibrant than ever- it just goes to show the great things that can happen when a community comes together."
