The Warren Historic Preservation Program has two parts:
1.) The demolition ordinance, which requires review and approval of exterior alterations of structures located within the Warren Historic District, and
2.) A voluntary tax credit program to assist owners of eligible properties in completing repairs and improvements that are harmonious with the historic fabric of the Town.

The Warren Voluntary Historic Preservation Program was appointed by the Town Council to oversee and administer the Voluntary Historic Preservation Program. Applications must be submitted by the WEDNESDAY prior to the scheduled meeting.

Will my property qualify?
Properties must be located in the Warren Voluntary Historic District or buildings over 100 years old qualify for the Warren Tax Credit.
What type Of work qualifies?
Most exterior repairs which meet the Standards & Guidelines will qualify. Original materials should be repaired. If materials are beyond repair, they must be replaced in kind. No interior work or landscaping can qualify for a tax credit.
How much can I save on repairs to my property?
Owners of historic residential properties that are either owner or non-owner occupied can qualify for a Warren real estate tax credit up to 20% of the cost of exterior restoration work. For every $1,000.00 you spend you get $200.00 back.
Owners of Historic properties that are occupied by both residential and commercial tenants can also qualify for a Warren real estate tax credit up to 20% of the cost of exterior restoration work done on the residential portion of the property. Again for every $1,000.00 you spend you get $200.00 back.
Can I qualify for state tax credits?
For owner of single family residences or residences with rental units that are owner occupied and located in the National Historic District, you may be eligible for an additional State of Rhode Island income tax credit equal to 20% of the cost of exterior restoration work. For every $1,000.00 you spend you get $200.00 back! (Some restrictions may apply for 4 or more family houses)
How can I apply?
The application process has been designed and simplified to make it easy to qualify for a Warren real estate tax credit, waiver of certain construction fees and possible Federal Tax Credits.
The application process does not require personal financial information. The committee and building official will be happy to assist you in he preparation of the application. You can complete you application on line or print it out a complete it. Your application will be reviewed for approval within 30 days of it’s filing. There is no application fee. You must submit your application and photographs of the building before a building permit can be issued under this program.
